What makes Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu different?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a system built upon the idea of using leverage and intelligence, instead of physical attributes, to control an opponent and causing the least amount of damage possible whilst doing so.
Compared to arts such as Karate and Tae Kwon Do, in BJJ, there are no strikes, just dominance through grappling.
So like Judo then?
BJJ is similar to Judo, but a lot more emphasis on ground grappling, although BJJ does cover throws and takedowns similar to Judo and Freestyle Wrestling. The goal of the art is to use the ground as an “equaliser”, a place where strikes are rendered useless from a downed assailant, but positioning and gravity can be used to amplify the effectiveness of the person on top.
Why is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu a good style for Kids?
BJJ limits the harm caused by strikes by closing distance effectively, and taking the fight to the ground where strikes are rendered useless by the person on the bottom. Through good positioning, the person on top can remain in control till the assailant is calm or help is rendered.
What is the learning process like?
Compared to more traditional styles of Martial Arts, BJJ is less structured, allowing each individual to create a style that suits them. A technique is taught, and the person then chooses if and how they want to implement it into their style. Practice is done through safe and supervised sparring sessions. This means that each child can amplify their natural attributes through technique, instead of having to adhere to techniques that may not suit their body type or personality.
